Kindling involves repeated administration of brief high-frequency electrophysiological stimulation of the brain at initially subthreshold intensities that eventually evoke full-blown seizures. It has thus been used not only as a model of epileptogenesis, but of long-term neuronal memory. Quenching is a phenomenon that utilizes low-frequency stimulation for much longer periods of time (eg, 1 Hz for 15 minutes), and appears to exert preventive effects on the development of kindling and inhibit the manifestation of full-blown kindled seizures by markedly increasing the amygdala afterdischarge and seizure threshold. (See also “Kindling and Quenching: Conceptual Implications for rTMS,” by Weiss and Post, page 32). The parameters of kindling and quenching with intracerebral stimulation of the amygdala in vivo are highly similar to those achieved in vitro in hippocampai slice preparations for inducing long-term potentiation (LTP) and longterm depression (LTD), respectively. These neuroplastic changes are relatively long lasting and appear reversible at the level of synaptic function with either LTD or LTP capable of countering the effects of the other.

Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.

There have been a number of recent investigations of segregation properties of diffusing particles in the presence of a single static trap in low dimensions. We study these properties when the diffusing particles are subject to different forms of external fields: global constant bias, random bias fields (Sinai model) and random transition rates. We discuss two measures of segregation, the distances from the trap either to the point at which the concentration profile reaches a specified fraction of its bulk value, or to the nearest unreacted particle. For the cases of global bias (both away from, and towards the trap) and random fields, we found that both measures of segregation have the same asymptotic temporal behavior, while for random transition rates they differ. We explain this difference by relating the nearest-neighbor distance measure to properties of hard-core diffusion in these systems. We also found anomalous spatial shapes for the profile in the vicinity of the trap in the random systems, as well as anomalous reaction rates.

Twelve women with bulimia participated in a study in which they binged and vomited on the day after hospital admission. Caloric intake, time spent bingeing and vomiting, and selfreported mood ratings demonstrated much variation from subject to subject. Both subjective and objective ratings of mood indicated that anxiety decreased more frequently and to a greater extent than depression, both during and after bingeing and vomiting. The present data, obtained in a controlled setting, tend to confirm previous information on binge episodes obtained by self-report from bulimic patients. Bingeing and vomiting episodes may provide bulimic patients with a physiological mechanism for temporarily relieving a dysphoric mood state.

It has been shown that for many epidemic models, the stochastic theory leads to essentially the same results as the deterministic theory provided that one identifies mean values with the functions calculated from the deterministic differential equations (cf. [1]). If one considers a generalization of Bailey's simple epidemic for a fixed population of size N, represented schematically by where I refers to an infected, S refers to a susceptible, and α and β are appropriate rate constants, then it is evident that at time t = ∞, the expected number of infected individuals must be zero provided that β > 0. If x(t) denotes the number of infected at time t, then the deterministic model is summarized by

The theory of epidemics has been formulated as a deterministic theory and as a stochastic theory. There has been little work, except for a recent paper by Bailey [1], on the transition between the two formulations. In this paper we present an alternate formulation to that of Bailey that leads to a perturbation method more easily extendible to higher orders.

This paper applies the constant population approximation to the study of epidemics which involve more than a single type of infective. An example of this would be a situation in which both clinically infected individuals and subclinically infected individuals or carriers are present.
We derive equations for the expected numbers of clinically infected individuals and carriers at any time t for the model with zero latent period and infectious periods having negative exponential distributions. From these equations we derive conditions under which a unimodal incidence curve can result, and expressions for the expected total epidemic size.

This paper applies the theory of semi-Markov processes to the construction of a stochastic model for interpreting data obtained from clinical trials. The model characterizes the patient as being in one of a finite number of states at any given time with an arbitrary probability distribution to describe the length of stay in a state. Transitions between states are assumed to be chosen according to a stationary finite Markov chain.
Other attempts have been made to develop stochastic models of clinical trials. However, these have all been essentially Markovian with constant transition probabilities which implies that the distribution of time spent during a visit to a state is exponential (or geometric for discrete Markov chains). Markov models need also to assume that the transitions in the state of a patient depend only on absolute time whereas the semi-Markov model assumes that transitions depend on time relative to a patient. Thus the models are applicable to degenerative diseases (cancer, acute leukemia), while Markov models with time dependent transition probabilities are applicable to colds and epidemic diseases. In this paper the Laplace transforms are obtained for (i) probability of being in a state at time t, (ii) probability distribution to reach absorption state and (iii) the probability distribution of the first passage times to go from initial states to transient or absorbing states, transient to transient, and transient to absorbing. The model is applied to a clinical study of acute leukemia in which patients have been treated with methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine. The agreement between the data and the model is very good.

In this paper we analyze the correlation coefficient between members of any two colonies out of an infinite ensemble of colonies. It is assumed that each colony has the same number of members, that migration takes place between the different colonies, and that there is a constant rate of mutation in each colony. An explicit formula is derived for the correlation function and the long distance form of this function is derived. It is shown that under rather weak restrictions on the pattern of migration the asymptotic form of the correlation function is characteristic of the dimension of the model.
